Toms River Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Police Officer

TOMS RIVER – Officials have charged a Toms River man with attempted murder after he struck an undercover Toms River police officer with his vehicle Tuesday evening.

According to authorities, Brian Swain (picture), 48, struck the officer with his vehicle as the officer approached Swain’s vehicle during an undercover investigation at the Seaview Square Mall in Lakewood.

The officer, who is being treated at Community Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, rolled over the suspect’s hood and windshield.

Swain then fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. Swain is currently detained at the Ocean County Jail, pending a detention hearing.

His passengers, Emil Menching, 39, of Toms River, and Timothy Meseroll, were also arrested. Menching is charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic needle. Meseroll was arrested thanks to an active Municipal Court warrant and was released on bail.
